Heroes Helping Heroes – Monument to Acknowledge Fallen Police/Fire Dogs

Saturday November 3, 2012 marked the first ever Heroes Helping Heroes fundraiser to raise the $100,000 needed to complete and set up the monument, proposed by Council Woman Sheri Capehart, to honor and recognize the 4 legged comrades of the Police and Fire Department.

Council woman Sheri Capehart (seen on the right with the Arlington PD K9 unit)  has always had a passion for Animal Services and when she became a Council Member in 2000 her first project was the Arlington Animal Shelter

When one of Arlington Fire’s ‘Fire Dogs’ (Jason – seen left) had to be put down the handler was distraught.  Capehart made a commitment to have a monument created to acknowledge “our Fire and Police dogs”

In 2009 she proposed the building of a memorial and the idea was immediately embraced.  “It has been a slow process and there was a lot of ground work to be done before fundraising for the project could begin” says Council Woman Capehart.  She is quick to mention that the project is a community affair.

Firefighter Bransford (Arlington FD) and Deputy Chief Lemaux (Arlington PD) volunteered to be “locked in kennels” from noon – midnight to help raise funds for Heroes Helping Heroes Monument.  For a $10 donation people could bail them out and get a picture

Even The infamous “McGruff” was also seen locked in one of the kennels

These, and many other, adorable Felines and Canines patiently (or maybe not so patiently) await adoption.

Unlike the Volunteers who could have bail posted (and were released at the end of the day) animals not adopted during the event would have to wait another day in “confinement”.

Hannah the Fire Dog with her handler Jayla Patterson were on hand for photos and “greet”

Author Melanie Garrett was at the event from noon – 3pm selling her book, “Under His Helmet”.  The books sold for $18.50 each and 40% of the cost of the books was immediately given to the Arlington Animal Shelter

Golden Paws, was also at the fundraiser selling their hand-made dog/kitty blankets, scarves, and toys.  Money received for items sold during the event went towards the Heroes Helping Heroes Monument.
