Police dog shot to death Jan 5, 2013 9:40 a.m.
The Denton county sheriff’s office is investigating the shooting death of one of their police dogs.
Chico escaped from his handler’s yard during a storm last month.
Deputies say a livestock owner in Wylie saw Chico near his property, mistook him for a coyote, shot him and buried him.
Tips led investigators to the owner who was described as remorseful.
The sheriff says it’s a tough loss for the department.
“Replacing him is going to be hard to do he was just a tremendous dog, a tremendous asset to this department, we don’t have enough nice things to say about him. Just a very tremendous dog,” said Sheriff Will Travis of Denton county.
Deputies will treat the shooting like any other criminal investigation.
The dog’s former handler is no longer with the sheriff’s office.
There will be a funeral service for Chico on Thursday.
